Showdown in the Eifel: Who will be ADAC Formula 4 champion?

  • Championship leader Bearman out to hold off the challenge from Tramnitz
  • 23 points between the two title contenders
  • The final three races of the season are live on adac.de/motorsport

Munich. The thrilling title race will be decided in the Eifel: Who has the stronger nerves, who will be ADAC Formula 4 champion? Championship leader Oliver Bearman (16, Great Britain, Van Amersfoort Racing) is out to take the final step towards the title, but his closest rival Tim Tramnitz (16, Hamburg, US Racing) will not go down without a fight. The stage is set for an exciting finale this weekend (5th to 7th November) at the Nürburgring. The races in the ADAC’s high-speed school will be shown live on motorsport.tv and at adac.de/motorsport.

“I come into the finale full of confidence and firmly believe that we will return to form at the Nürburgring and pick up good results,” said Bearman, whose lead over Tramnitz currently stands at 23 points. However, the young Brit has now gone eight races without a win – during this time, Tramnitz has triumphed on four occasions to fight his way to within striking distance of the championship leader.

Last time out, at the Hockenheimring, Tramnitz made up twelve points on Bearman. As such, the top rookie from 2020 has just one option this weekend: Attack and put Bearman under pressure – but without losing his head. “I obviously want to win the title. However, at the same time, I will not be putting any pressure on myself and will just try to score as many points as possible,” said Tramnitz.

A maximum 75 points are up for grabs, meaning Luke Browning (19, Great Britain, US Racing) is still mathematically in contention for the title. However, given that he trails Bearman by 67 points, Browning would need the leading pair to slip up big time at the final race weekend.

Qualifying on Friday afternoon (from 13:25) will be hugely important, as the two favourites look to assert themselves in the close title race. “I am confident that we will have a good weekend. The last few race weekends have gone well. Maybe current form is just in our favour,” said Tramnitz, who, like his rival and former team-mate Bearman, is still looking for his first race win in the Eifel region of Germany. “I really like the Nürburgring. The weather in the Eifel is an added challenge, particularly in November, and could have a big influence,” said the ADAC Stiftung Sport driver.

ADAC Formula 4 visited the iconic circuit twice in the 2020 season, and now returns for the season finale for the first time. Despite all the tension, there is also great anticipation among the title contenders. “I am looking forward to the races and will do my best,” promised Bearman.

He could succeed Jonny Edgar and, in doing so, become the second British champion of ADAC Formula 4. There have been two German champions so far in the high-speed school: Marvin Dienst in the 2015 season and Lirim Zendeli in 2018. As such, Tramnitz could become the third German champion in the ADAC junior series.

On Friday, the theorising will finally be over as the drivers get down to business on the track. The Drivers’ Championship is not the only competition that will be decided at the Nürburgring. There is also a two-way battle in the Team Championship. This is currently led by US Racing, the team run by Ralf Schumacher and Gerhard Ungar, who lead Van Amersfoort Racing by eight points.

Four new drivers will join the starting field at the final weekend. Alfio Andrea Spina (Italy) starts for BWR Motorsport, Marcos Flack (Australia) and Dutchman Robert de Haan are in action for Van Amersfoort Racing. Nikhil Bohra (Singapore) is in the cockpit for R-ace GP.
