Felipe Drugovich is 'half-time' ADAC Formula 4 champion

  • The Brazilian takes his third win of season at Oschersleben
  • Mick Wishofer is best rookie again
  • Third ADAC Formula 4 race on Sunday

Oschersleben: The Brazilian Felipe Drugovich (17, Van Amersfoort Racing) has now secured his third win of the season in the ADAC Formula 4, becoming the 'half-time' champion of the ADAC's high-speed school. The 17-year-old won at Oschersleben from Marcus Armstrong (16, New Zealand, Prema Powerteam) and Fabio Scherer (18, Switzerland, US Racing), putting him in the lead in the overall standings with 142 points after the eleventh of 21 races this season, narrowly beating Juri Vips (16, Estonia, Prema Powerteam) on 135 points and Armstrong with 133.

"I'm mega happy, but as the name suggests, I'm only the half-time champion, and there's still the rest of the season to come," said the Brazilian, who is the first driver to secure three race wins this year. "I intend now to build on my performance."

Juan Manuel Correa (17, USA/Ecuador, Prema Powerteam) came home in fourth place, followed by rookie champion, Nicklas Nielsen (20, Denmark, US Racing), and the driver who had led up until now, Juri Vips. Jonathan Aberdein (19, South Africa, Motopark), Michael Waldherr (20, Germany, Neuhauser Racing), Kim-Luis Schramm (19, Germany, US Racing) and Sophia Flörsch (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg eV) completed the Top Ten. Mick Wishofer (17, Austria, Lechner Racing) was again best rookie after booking P16.

Drugovich got away to a perfect start and was already leading by 1.3 secs by the end of the first lap. Only New Zealand's Armstrong, who won this morning's first race, was able to keep up with the Brazilian. A group headed by Scherer followed behind them.

Drugovich initially extended his lead to over two seconds, but his cushion was gradually beginning to shrink by the end of the race. Nevertheless, he kept his nerve, stayed in P1, and was ultimately rewarded with success. Swiss driver Scherer defended his third place by coming home behind the lead pair of drivers, achieving a podium for the second time this year.

The fourth ADAC Formula 4 race weekend will finish with the third race on Sunday, starting at 11.05am. SPORT1 and SPORT1+ will broadcast the race live on TV, and live streams will also be available on the Internet at www.SPORT1.de, www.adac.de/Motorsport and on Facebook. The result of the first race decided the order on the grid for this race with the Top Ten lining up in reverse order. Consequently, Michael Waldherr will be in pole position, and race winner Armstrong will start from P10.

The ADAC Formula 4 is taking place at Oschersleben alongside the ADAC TCR Germany as part of the support programme for the TCR International Series, and the Motorsport Arena will be celebrating its 20th anniversary with a big party. Cult East German rock band 'City' will give a concert on Saturday evening in the infield of the circuit.

More comments from the ADAC Formula 4

Felipe Drugovich (Winner, Van Amersfoort Racing): "The first ten minutes were just perfect. Marcus gradually closed on me towards the end, but I had everything under control."

Marcus Armstrong (Second, Prema Powerteam): "That was a good race. I didn't take too many risks and am pleased to have finished in the points. There was very little pressure on me from behind, so I was able to control things reasonably calmly."

Fabio Scherer (Third, US Racing): "That was quite a tough race. I had to keep my nerve. Any mistake would have been catastrophic. Fortunately, I didn't make any, which brought me third place in the end. I knew that in actual fact, there are only two places where you can overtake - in the first two or three turns, so I'm really pleased."

Mick Wishofer (16th and best rookie, Lechner Racing): "Our pace was better in the first race. We had some problems with tyres in Race 2, but by and large, I'm pleased with my rookie win. We've made definite progress during the season. I'm mega happy with my four rookie wins and hope to secure another. Obviously, a place in the Top Ten would be really great, but that's extremely tough in your first year. We're working on it, working hard the team and me."
