Start-finish victory for Marvin Dienst at the Lausitzring

  • Marvin Dienst wins Race 2 at the Lausitzring
  • Mücke Motorsport move to top of team standings after second successive one-two victory
  • Dienst after second win of season: “I was the lucky beneficiary.”

Klettwitz – A win that was some time coming: Marvin Dienst (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) has won the second race of the Formel ADAC weekend at the Lausitzring. The 17-year-old converted his pole position on Sunday morning into a second win of the season. Dienst’s team, Mücke Motorsport competing under the aegis of the ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V., had double reason to celebrate as Maximilian Günther (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) finished second to secure them a one-two victory in their home race. Mikkel Jensen (19, Denmark, Neuhauser Racing) was meanwhile claiming his third podium in a row.

“I’m really pleased about this victory,” said Dienst after making his second podium appearance at the Lausitzring. “It’s a very special feeling to be celebrating a Mücke one-two with Maximilian on our team’s home circuit.” In the first race on Saturday, he was unable to make his pole position count against the eventual race winner, team-mate Günther. This time, everything went according to plan for Dienst. Starting from pole once again, he built up a lead on his pursuers over the first few laps and eventually crossed the line 1.3 seconds ahead of ADAC Sports Foundation protégé Günther.

Intense battle for second place

While Dienst’s win was not in any danger, Günther had to fight hard for second place. Starting from third on the grid, last year’s championship runner-up soon overtook Jensen to move into second. The current championship leader wasn’t to be shaken off, however, and continued to apply pressure until the ninth lap when he re-passed Günther on Turn 1. Günther’s counterattack followed one lap later at the same place, as he forced Jensen into a small error, overtook him and then hung on to second place through to the end of the race.

Kim Luis Schramm (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) took the chequered flag more than ten seconds adrift of the leading trio to claim fourth place, the same result as in Saturday’s race on this 3.44km track. The Mücke Motorsport youngster benefited from a drive-through penalty for Ralph Boschung (16, Switzerland, Lotus) for disregarding the track limits: the Lotus driver had been all set for a P4 finish up until the eleventh lap.

Local favourite Breuer makes impressive debut

With Philip Hamprecht (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) finishing fifth, Mücke Motorsport had four of its drivers in the Top Five – an impressive result for the Berlin-based outfit in front of its home crowd.

Behind Hamprecht, the best-placed rookie of the eight series newcomers, Joel Eriksson (16, Sweden, Lotus) took sixth place. Lotus team-mate Luis-Enrique Breuer (17, Germany, Lotus) driving only his second Formel ADAC race was once again in the points, finishing seventh; the local favourite from Berlin had already managed a Top Ten result on his debut in formula racing the day before. Dennis Marshall (17, Germany, Lotus) completed the Top Eight, which means that he will be starting the third and final race at the Lausitzring on Sunday from pole position (live stream on www.adac.de/formel-adac from 4:15 CEST).

Championship lead for Mücke Motorsport

In the drivers’ championship, Günther has further reduced the deficit on overall leader Jensen. After the eighth of the season’s 24 races, the 16-year-old has closed the gap to eight points. For the first time this season, Mücke Motorsport (220 points) have edged ahead of Neuhauser Racing (208 points) in the team standings, with the added satisfaction of doing so on their home turf.

Comments from the Top Three

Marvin Dienst (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.), Winner:
“I’m really pleased about this victory. It’s a very special feeling to be celebrating a Mücke one two with Maximilian on our team’s home circuit. The race was much more straightforward than I had expected. My focus today was on the start, because this didn’t work perfectly in the first race. I got off the line really well but then had to defend my position against Maximilian on the early laps. Because he and Mikkel were scrapping with each other, they were steadily losing time on me – so today I was the lucky beneficiary. I was able to pull away from the pair of them, then drive a bit slower and conserve my tyres for the third race.”

Maximilian Günther (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.), Second:
“Once again, a very good race for me. Right at the start, I was able to push past Mikkel and attack Marvin for the lead. It was a tight race against Mikkel, but the fights were always fair and a lot of fun. He went past me first, but I immediately clung on and tried to work out the sections of the track on which I was faster. Fortunately, I was able to get past again and ultimately cross the finish line ahead of him. Today we had a car capable of winning, but because of all the jostling for position behind Marvin, he was quickly out of reach. Consequently, I focused on securing second place ahead of Mikkel and notching up more points in the championship.”

Mikkel Jensen (19, Denmark, Neuhauser Racing), Third:
“I’m happy with third place, because I got the maximum that was possible today. Unfortunately, Maximilian went past me at the start, but the subsequent scraps were a lot of fun. I kept on catching him up, and eventually I was able to overtake him. Unfortunately, I then made a braking error on Turn 1 and had to take the outside line to avoid contact with Maximilian, which allowed him the opportunity to overtake me again. I then tried everything to counterattack, but unfortunately we had some problems on the last corner, so I never got close enough at the end of the long straight.”
