Maximilian Günther wins opening race at the Lausitzring

  • After third win of season, Maximilian Günther now holds record for wins at the Lausitzring
  • Double success for Berlin-based team Mücke Motorsport in home race
  • Local driver Luis-Enrique Breuer in the points on race debut

Klettwitz – Best of starts in home race: Competing under the aegis of the ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V., Mücke Motorsport secured a double victory at the Lausitzring. Maximilian Günther (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) won the first of three Formel ADAC races at the Lausitzring, beating team-mate Marvin Dienst (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.). Championship leader Mikkel Jensen (19, Denmark, Neuhauser Racing) completed the podium party in third place.

“Victory in my team’s home race - what an incredible feeling,” said the reigning vice-champion Günther, pleased with his third victory of the season. After his double success during the 2013 season, Günther is now the first Formel ADAC driver to have won more than two races at the Lausitzring.

Double victory for Mücke Motorsport in home race

The ADAC Sports Foundation protégé laid the foundations for success on the first lap. Günther overtook pole-setter Dienst shortly after the start in a skilful manoeuvre running through Turn 1 and subsequently opened up a comfortable lead. Instead of pursuing Günther, Dienst had to focus on what was happening behind him and fend off Jensen in hot pursuit. The Neuhauser Racing driver followed Dienst for quite a few laps and put pressure on his opponent by achieving several sector best times in the second stint of the race. However, Dienst held his nerve to secure the first double victory of the season for the team from the metropolis.

A third Mücke Motorsport driver, Kim Luis Schramm (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.), finished in the top four. However, Schramm could not quite keep up with the leading trio and had a deficit of almost 13 seconds on the leaders after 18 laps. Best-placed Lotus driver Ralph Boschung (16, Switzerland, Lotus) crossed the finish line behind them to take fifth place from Philip Hamprecht (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.). The Mücke Motorsport rookie placed sixth and was the most successful of the eight series newcomers.

Birthday boy Schiller makes great charge

Fabian Schiller (17, Germany, Schiller Motorsport) produced the best charge of the race. He started last in the race after suffering technical problems in qualifying but moved up five positions on the first few laps. After improving his position even further, the Schiller Motorsport driver crossed the finish line in eighth place to be rewarded with important championship points on his 17th birthday.

Breuer from Berlin: Points on debut

Debuting in the Formel ADAC, Luis Enrique Breuer (17, Germany, Lotus) had the strangest race. The local driver from Berlin had started from fourth place on the grid after a strong qualifying but fell back to the rear of the field after a skid early on. The Lotus driver subsequently fought his way up to finish tenth behind Tim Zimmermann (17, Germany, Neuhauser Racing) and secure his first point in single-seater racing.

Dienst will start from pole position once again in the second race on Sunday morning (visit www.adac.de/formel-adac) for live stream, commencing at 10:15 am). Championship leader Jensen will tackle the eighth of 24 races from second place on the grid. Directly behind him in third place will be Günther, who has reduced the deficit on Jensen in the championship standings to eleven points.

Comments from the Top Three

Maximilian Günther (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.), Winner:
“Victory in my team’s home race - what an incredible feeling. To be the most successful driver in the Formel ADAC at the Lausitzring is just reward for all the hard work done along with the team. The race went like clockwork after the less than perfect qualifying. I knew I had a chance at the start and used it straightaway. I got off the line better than Marvin, made my move going into the first corner and, from that moment on, was able to control the race from the front. Towards the end, though, I decided to nurse the tyres and secure the race win at the finish line in a controlled fashion. Now the deficit on Mikkel in the championship standings is only eleven points - that sounds much better to me than after the last race weekend.”

Marvin Dienst (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.), Second:
“I’m pleased about accruing 15 more points towards the championship, but more would have been possible today. My car was fast enough for the win, but unfortunately, I couldn’t get past Marvin at the start. Shortly after that, I made a small mistake in Turn 3 and so continued to lose ground. The yellow flags came out when I was almost back within striking distance, but I eased off and allowed the gap to grow once again as I didn’t want to risk a penalty. Later in the race, I had no downforce when running directly behind Marvin through the fast turns, which prevented me from launching an attack.”

Mikkel Jensen (19, Denmark, Neuhauser Racing), Third:
“After starting from pole position, I would have liked to win, for sure. Unfortunately, I didn’t get off the line well at the start, as my revs were too low. Nevertheless, I’m very satisfied with second place. My car was very good today. I posted fast lap times right to the end and matched Maxi’s speed. I’ll try to start a bit more aggressively in the second race on Sunday and convert my pole position into victory the next time out.”
