Second win for Mikkel Jensen at the Nürburgring

  • Tim Zimmermann in second place: One-two victory for Neuhauser Racing
  • Title contender Maximilian Günther on podium once again
  • Race winner Mikkel Jensen: “Another vital step towards winning the championship.”

Nürburgring. Mikkel Jensen (19, Denmark, Neuhauser Racing) notched up his second victory of the weekend in the Eifel. The championship leader won the opening race and then clinched the win in the third Formel ADAC race at the Nürburgring, ensuring a double victory for Neuhauser Racing to round off the sixth race weekend of the 2014 season. Tim Zimmerman (17, Germany, Neuhauser Racing) crossed the finish line in second place. Reigning championship runner-up Maximilian Günther (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) completed the podium party.

“That was a perfect result for me and my team, Neuhauser Racing,” said Jensen after his seventh win of the season. The Danish driver, starting from grid position 2, had an action-packed race. While scrapping for P2, he made light contact with Fabian Schiller (17, Germany, Schiller Motorsport). The Schiller Motorsport driver, contesting a home race at the Nürburgring, subsequently had to retire. The incident brought out the safety car. Jensen was able to continue but lost second place to ADAC Sports Foundation protégé Zimmerman.

Pole-setter Walilko hit by bad luck

On the restart, pole-setter Igor Walilko (16, Poland, JBR Motorsport & Engineering) retained the lead at first. One lap later, though, Jensen overtook firstly team-mate Zimmerman and then shortly afterwards Walilko. Jensen extended his lead consistently on subsequent laps and at the finish line had more than a six second lead on Zimmerman in second place. The Neuhauser Racing rookie inherited P2 from Walilko on lap eight when the JBR Motorsport & Engineering driver had to serve a drive-through penalty and fell back down the field. The reason for his penalty, failure to take up the correct position on the grid.

Günther moved up into third place as a result of Walilko’s penalty to achieve his second podium of the weekend. The ADAC Sports Foundation protégé made a good start from P6 on the grid, moving up into P4 on the initial laps. The driver for Mücke Motorsport, who compete under the aegis of ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V., was then able to draw away from the rest of the field. An exciting scrap was going on behind him.

Exciting scrap for P4

Marvin Dienst (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) went wheel to wheel over the course of many laps with Ralph Boschung (16, Switzerland, Lotus) and gained the upper hand after swapping positions with him many times. Dienst tried to secure his third podium in the Eifel by making an overtaking move on team-mate Günther on the final lap. He failed in his attempt and had to be content with fourth place.

Boschung was handed a drive-through penalty after a collision with Dennis Marschall (18, Germany, Lotus) on the final lap, which was subsequently converted into a 30-second penalty after the race. Consequently, the Swiss driver lost fifth place to his Lotus team-mate Luis-Enrique Breuer (17, Germany, Lotus). Local driver Nico Menzel (16, Germany, Schiller Motorsport) completed the top eight behind Joel Eriksson (16, Sweden, Lotus) and Kim Luis Schramm (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.). After a tough weekend at his home fixture, this was the first time that Menzel had finished in the points.

Jensen travels to Sachsenring as championship leader

Jensen continues to lead the championship after his two wins at the Nürburgring. The Neuhauser Racing driver continues to head the standings in the run-up to the penultimate race weekend of the season at the Sachsenring (September 19th – 21st). Championship rival Günther is in second place with 201 points.

Comments from the Top Three

Mikkel Jensen (19, Denmark, Neuhauser Racing), Winner:
“That was a perfect result for me and my team Neuhauser Racing. The driver in front of me was very slow at the start. I tried to pass him on the outside and lost P2 in the process. Shortly after that, there was, unfortunately, some contact with Fabian Schiller. He closed the door on me as I was about to overtake and then didn’t leave me any room, and I couldn’t take evasive action. Fortunately, my car was not damaged and I later went into the lead. I have taken another important step on the way to winning the championship. My aim now is obviously to lift the title after the second race at the Sachsenring before the end of the season.”

Tim Zimmermann (17, Germany, Neuhauser Racing), Second:
“A double victory for Neuhauser Racing, it can hardly get better. I’m pleased about the excellent team-work between Mikkel and myself. My start was good and I overtook Mikkel. However, he was quicker than me and soon went past. From that moment on, I was aiming only to achieve a double victory for the team at the finish line. After locking up slightly, Maximilian Günther closed on me once again, but I was a bit quicker and immediately increased the gap between us once more. After a tough weekend, this podium is a really good way to finish.”

Maximilian Günther (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.), Third:
“That was a good race and a fine close to the weekend. I moved up one position immediately at the start and subsequently took advantage of a number of incidents in front of me to move up into P3. I was able to keep up with Zimmerman in front of me but couldn’t do enough to launch an attack. Towards the end of the race, my team-mate got into my slipstream again. He tried to attack and as he did so, we both had to drive onto the grass. Fortunately, neither of our cars was damaged and we retained our positions.”
