Double pole for Maximilian Günther in Zandvoort

  • Maximilian Günther will start the first two races from pole position
  • Major tussle between title contenders in qualifying: Mikkel Jensen in grid position two
  • Championship runner-up Günther: “Super, a perfect start to the weekend.”

Zandvoort – Full steam ahead for the second race weekend of the 2014 Formel ADAC season. The first of three events to be held outside Germany this year is about to be staged at Zandvoort. The qualifying session on Saturday morning suffered a 25-minute delay due to heavy rain. Maximilian Günther (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) coped best with the difficult weather conditions, securing pole position for the first race on Saturday afternoon (visit: www.adac.de/formel-adac for live stream, starting at 1:35 pm,).

The reigning Formel ADAC vice-champion needed just 1:55.096 minutes to cover the wet track on his best lap. The ADAC Sports Foundation protégé will also be in pole position for the start of the second race at the Circuit Park Zandvoort. In the second race, start positions are determined by the second-fastest lap times in qualifying.

Clash of the title contenders

Günther took up station at the top of the timesheets quite early on to defend his lead in the series. By securing pole positions numbers ten and eleven, the 16-year-old also extended his record as the most successful driver ever in qualifying in the ADAC High Speed Academy.

Mikkel Jensen (19, Denmark, Neuhauser Racing) will start from second place in the first race. The Neuhauser Racing driver secured a 1:55.668 on his best lap and so was 0.572 seconds behind his championship rival. Jensen has a lead of three points on Günther in the overall standings ahead of this weekend’s three races.

Zimmermann best rookie

Coming home approximately one second behind the leading duo, Fabian Schiller (16, Germany, Schiller Motorsport) secured third place to achieve his best qualifying result so far in Formel ADAC. Tim Zimmermann (17, Germany, Neuhauser Racing) improved in the final minutes to move up from sixth to fourth position and was the most successful of the seven series newcomers.

Kim Luis Schramm (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) and Ralph Boschung (16, Switzerland, Lotus) will share the third row. Finishing not too far behind, the two rookies Joel Eriksson (16, Sweden, Lotus) and Nico Menzel (16, Germany, Schiller Motorsport) were seventh and eight. The qualifying session was stopped due to the difficult conditions with seven minutes to go and was not restarted.

Once again this year, the ADAC is making a live stream available to fans unable to watch the three races at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in person. This free service is available on the official ADAC Motorsport website at www.adac.de/motorsport.

Maximilian Günther (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.), Pole, Race 1 and 2:
“A perfect start to the weekend, things could not have gone better. My car was set up brilliantly for the difficult conditions – many thanks to my team. We can build on these two pole positions in the upcoming races. I felt really at ease despite the rain and had no problems. I’d prepared myself for interruptions during qualifying and adjusted my programme to suit. If we get off to a good start this afternoon, then a win is definitely possible. I’m not bothered about the weather here; we’re in a good position both in the wet and in the dry.”
