Between 8th and 10th June, Formel ADAC will be at the Sachsenring for the third race weekend of the 2012 season. For ADAC Sports Foundation protégés Marvin Kirchhöfer (18, Leipzig, Lotus) and Florian Herzog (18, Dresden, Mücke Motorsport), this will be their home race, so they will be doubly keen to impress.
“I won three of the first six races of the season, and I’m hoping this run continues in front of my home crowd,” says Kirchhöfer. The young talent from Leipzig leads the Formel ADAC standings on 32 points ahead of Polish driver Kuba Dalewski (16, Lotus).
But it is not only Kirchhöfer who has a minimal distance to travel – Florian Herzog will be making the relatively short journey from Dresden. “My family and my friends will be there to cheer me on and give me all the support they can,” he says. Herzog has big ambitions for the third race weekend of the season: “My target is a place among the top five in each race.”
Challenging circuit
The 3.654 km Sachsenring hosts various race events, including the MotoGP World Championship. The track is generally rated as ‘challenging’ by drivers who find its undulating character particularly demanding.
“The track is one of my abso
lute favourites on the racing calendar,” says Kirchhöfer. “It is somewhat similar to the Circuit Park Zandvoort – there are lots of tight sections, plus you’re constantly going uphill and downhill. It’s just so much fun to drive on this famous old track.” One of his favourite places is Turn 3, also known as ‘Omega’: “There is no correct racing line here, so you can both gain a lot of time and lose it too.”
Well-matched field at the Sachsenring
Since Formel ADAC made its debut in 2008 as a sort of ‘academy’ for young drivers embarking on a career in single-seater racing, the Sachsenring has been a regular fixture on the calendar. In the ten races previously staged on the track at Hohenstein-Ernstthal, there have been seven different winners, three of whom have recorded two victories each: Richie Stanaway, Pascal Wehrlein and Sven Müller.
The current crop of Formel ADAC drivers have also shown themselves to be really well matched during the first two race weekends of 2012, firstly at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, and secondly, in the debut event at the Circuit Park Zandvoort. In the six championship rounds so far, nine drivers from six different countries have claimed a spot on the podium. Four young drivers from as many countries have finished on the top podium spot at least once: Marvin Kirchhöfer (Germany), Thomas Jäger (Austria), Kuba Dalewski (Poland) and Beitske Visser (Netherlands).
