Facing the future together: Volkswagen, Dunlop and the ADAC aim to continue Formel ADAC cooperation into 2014
- ADAC extends contracts with existing partners for another year
- Successful collaboration with Volkswagen and Dunlop since series first inaugurated in 2008

The ADAC is paving the way forward for its successful single-seater junior racing programme at a relatively early stage. The world’s second largest automobile club and its two series partners, Volkswagen and Dunlop, have extended their partnership in Formel ADAC for a further year, into 2014. Since the inception of the junior series in 2008, the Wolfsburg car manufacturer has provided engines for the Formel ADAC racing car powered by Volkswagen. A standard 145bhp, 1.6-litre petrol direct injection engine is used across the board. Since 2008, tyre manufacturer Dunlop has provided quality racing tyres for the Dallara single-seaters that comply with tough Formula 3 safety requirements.
ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk: “For many years, Volkswagen and Dunlop have shown their commitment to the Formel ADAC which constitutes such an important element in the work of bringing on young drivers in German motor racing. Only through intensive, first-rate partnerships can we provide the right platform for juniors and produce successful stars – Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg, to name but a few. This early extension of contracts will ensure planning security for teams and drivers. We intend to continue the Formel ADAC success story, along with our partners.”
Formel ADAC cars powered by Volkswagen are used exclusively in Formel ADAC. Thus, the technical foundations remain the same for all of the young drivers, ensuring a level playing field in all of the season’s 24 races. “Volkswagen has supported junior motor racing for many years. With Formel ADAC, the ADAC provides the ideal platform to introduce promising young drivers to professional sports,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “Our proven 1.6-litre FSI engine, producing 145bhp, is the ideal power unit for the talent factory – high in quality, extremely efficient and yet cost-effective.”
Alexander Kühn, Dunlop Motorsport Manager, speaking about the contract extension with the ADAC: “Racing drivers can rely on Dunlop tyres from the beginning of their careers right through up into the upper echelons of professional motor racing. Formel ADAC offers us the perfect link between our involvement in karting and professional motor racing. In developing tyres that are precisely matched to the vehicles, we take great care to ensure consistency over a long period of time and optimum driveability. The junior drivers contest three races at each race weekend, and we want to make sure that tyres remain as durable as possible.”
Bringing on young drivers has a long history in the ADAC. For many years, it has been the springboard for future motor racing stars – Formula 1 drivers Sebastian Vettel, Nico Hülkenberg and Nico Rosberg, and DTM top stars such as Martin Tomczyk and Timo Glock all started their successful careers in the ADAC junior single-seater racing series.
