DTM – Stars and Stories from the Norisring

Nuremberg. Summer, sun and big-name visitors from the worlds of sport and show business: the DTM weekend at the sold-out Norisring served up an entertaining mix of motor racing and event programme for the 118,500 spectators. Among the prominent guests were the Minister President of Bavaria, Markus Söder, entertainer Oliver Pocher, open water world champion Leonie Beck and world rally champion Sébastien Ogier, as well as DTM champions René Rast, Timo Scheider and Sheldon van der Linde. The party atmosphere came courtesy of The Yellow Tones on the DTM Beer Garden Stage, while live cooking with star chef Ali Güngörmüş and a journey back through four decades of the DTM with cult cars provided plenty of entertainment away from the track.

Prominent visit to the DTM: Markus Söder presents winner's trophy at the Norisring
Markus Söder attended the DTM event at the Norisring on Sunday, and watched the Sunday race against the backdrop of an impressive crowd in his home city of Nuremberg. The Minister President of Bavaria then presented race winner Nicki Thiim with their trophy on the podium - a moment that underlined the close connection between the Norisring classic and his Bavarian home.

Nine-time world rally champion Sébastien Ogier has a job to do in the DTM
The DTM welcomed a record world champion: Sébastien Ogier, who has nine world titles to his name and is tied with his compatriot Sébastien Loeb as the most successful rally driver of all time, was not going to miss the opportunity to visit round four of the DTM at the Norisring. "I am visiting my wife Andrea, who is presenting for ProSieben. However, it is always a joy to be at the DTM," said Ogier. "I love any kind of motor racing and could imagine taking on a new challenge in a DTM car after my career in rallying. A general feature of any motorsport is that you have to drive at the limit without exceeding it." After that, Ogier had a job to do, sending the drivers into race seven of the season with the "Drivers start your engines" sign.

Entertainer Oliver Pocher: DTM instead of football
Oliver Pocher is a big motorsport fan and has attended the DTM on several occasions in the past. The entertainer enjoyed the special atmosphere at Germany's only street circuit. "The Norisring is truly an iconic circuit! What I particularly like about the DTM is that it is far more accessible than, for example, Formula 1," said Pocher. "When the German football team is out of the World Cup, a trip to the DTM is the best way to spend a Saturday in Nuremberg," he added with a wink.

Ali Güngörmüş cooks live at the DTM
Wooden spoon instead of pit lane: star chef Ali Güngörmüş was a guest of Schaeffler at the DTM. However, he saw little of the action on the track, as he was kept busy himself. The 49-year-old treated DTM guests to a live cooking session with grilled delicacies and exquisite side dishes on Saturday evening. Güngörmüş was perfectly prepared for the task at hand: "I made a baba ganoush, an oriental aubergine dip, and served it with pepper, courgette, pepperoncini, garlic fillet steak, and octopus." The TV chef's appraisal of the DTM: "The weather was incredible and the people were on top form. A great experience."

Swimmer Leonie Beck impressed by the atmosphere
Leonie Beck is in her element in the water. This weekend, the three-time open water world champion was given a taste of the world of motorsport. Beck was a guest of Schaeffler at the street circuit in the heart of Nuremberg. Following a tour of the paddock and a stroll around the event site, the swimmer from Augsburg said: "This is my first time at a motorsport event. It was incredibly exciting to experience the DTM at the Norisring. I was particularly impressed by the mega atmosphere."

Young journalists grill Wittmann, Engstler and Feller
For local favourite Marco Wittmann, Lamborghini driver Luca Engstler, and Porsche racer Ricardo Feller, the weekend in Nuremberg began as early as Tuesday. The DTM trio faced questions from young journalists at a children's press conference at Cupra Garage Nuremberg. The young reporters had applied in advance to radio station 98.6 Charivari, and not only had fascinating questions on motorsport, but also wanted to find out what the drivers got up to away from the racetrack. "Press conferences with journalists are usually very professional and structured. In contrast, it was really relaxed and entertaining with the children. We had questions like whether we had been caught speeding, whether we have points on our driving licence, and which superhero we would like to be. They were creative questions, and sometimes very amusing," said Wittmann.

The Yellow Tones rock the DTM Beer Garden Stage
Two evenings, one stage, plenty of party atmosphere: The Yellow Tones rocked the DTM Beer Garden Stage on Friday and Saturday. The ADAC's top-40 band thrilled motorsport fans with the latest hits and golden oldies. Guitarist Dr. Dieter Nirschl (Executive Board Member, Tourism and Traffic, ADAC e.V.) was impressed by the atmosphere. "It is a gift to be able to play in front of such a great crowd. As a cover band, our repertoire has something for everyone. We had a great party with the fans at the Norisring."

Autograph session with Nuremberg footballers
The home of second division football club 1. FC Nuremberg is the Max-Morlock Stadium near the Norisring. Players from the nine-time German champions took full advantage of their home event and were busy signing autographs in the DTM Fan Zone on Sunday. "I do not have any experience of motorsport, and this was my first time at an event like this," revealed midfielder Julian Justvan. "We were able to look behind the scenes of the DTM and get really close to the drivers and race cars. The atmosphere was great - an impressive experience."

Rast, Scheider, van der Linde – trio of DTM champions at the Norisring
There was plenty of DTM title-winning experience at the Norisring: three-time champion René Rast, two-time winner Timo Scheider, and 2022 champion Sheldon van der Linde visited the "Franconian Monaco" at the weekend. For decades, the street circuit has been one of the highlights on the DTM calendar. Rast and van der Linde have both won there in the past, while Scheider made it onto the podium once. Together, they followed the race action, visited the pit lane and paddock, and took time for fans and photos. Rast also appeared on the starting grid, where he sent the DTM field into Sunday's race.

Maro Engel signs soapbox for a good cause
A good cause on four little wheels: Robert Weininger, serial winner of the Nuremberg soapbox race, put his vehicle up for auction at the Norisring. The proceeds went to former Bundesliga player Giovane Elber's foundation "Verein zur Förderung brasilianischer Straßenkinder e. V." (Association for the Support of Brazilian Street Children). Maro Engel was only too happy to sign the successful soapbox – the Mercedes-AMG driver knows the South American country well. "My father has been living in Brazil for over 20 years. As such, I am often on holiday there with my wife and daughter. I am pleased to be able to do my bit and support this great campaign," said Engel. With Germany having already exited the World Cup, he now has his fingers crossed for Brazil. "They live for football in Brazil. It is fundamentally important, probably more important than in other countries. For this reason, I am pleased when Brazil do well at the World Cup."

Entertaining Norisring opener at the Dutzendteich lake
On Friday evening, business partners, media representatives and friends of the DTM warmed up for the race weekend at the "MotorSport Lounge" industry get-together. In a relaxed atmosphere, guests chatted and were entertained with music whilst enjoying refreshing drinks and delicious food. The DTM drivers were also in the Bootshaus on the Dutzendteich lake. Ricardo Feller: "In recent years, it has become a really nice tradition to meet at the Dutzendteich and have an interesting chat with people from different industries. The delicious food obviously helps with the great atmosphere. I think it would be nice if we had events like this at other racetracks."

Cult DTM cars at the
Four decades of DTM on four wheels: vintage cars brought nostalgic flair to the Norisring at the weekend. On all three days of the event, show laps from cult cars took spectators on a historic trip back in time through four decades of the DTM. From the Ford Sierra Cosworth and the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16V to the Toyota Supra MK3 DTM, the cars on display were all intrinsically linked to the history of the racing series. Last year's ADAC GT4 Germany driver Thomas Rackl returned to his home circuit and took to the Norisring in a BMW 320 STW from 1994. "It is very special to race so close to the walls and barriers on this narrow track in a 32-year-old car," said Rackl. "It was incredibly good fun to be a part of my home event at the Norisring with a classic naturally-aspirated engine and that unique sound."
