- BWT Race Lap Award yields 70,000 Euro for drinking water projects in Africa
- Underlining commitment to sustainability with “Driving Change” joint initiative
Munich. More than two million bottles saved and 70,000 Euro for a good cause: The DTM and BWT (Best Water Technology) take stock after a successful 2026 season. The partners implemented the BWT Race Lap Award to support b.waterMISSION, an initiative to provide access to safe and clean drinking water in Africa. They have also hit a new milestone with regard to reducing the number of single-use bottles used. Since launching their collaboration in 2021, the ADAC and the industry-leading water technology company have saved a total of 2,012,502 plastic and glass bottles at motorsport events.
The BWT Race Lap Award turns each completed lap into a contribution to a good cause. For each race lap chalked up within the DTM, BWT and the ADAC make a donation of four Euro to b.waterMISSION. The drivers recorded a total of 12,114 laps during the 16 races of the 2026 season, collecting 48,456 Euro. The two partners topped this amount up to 70,000 Euro. The donation supports construction projects, primarily in rural regions of Africa. New DTM champion Thomas Preining was presented with a cheque representing the total amount during the prize ceremony at the Hockenheimring.
“Millions of people love to watch motor racing – and we are using this power to drive our sustainability initiative. Together with the ADAC, we have used Driving Change during this DTM season to show how effective strong partnerships can be: Our BWT Water Stations guarantee access to locally mineralised BWT water and have contributed to reducing the number of single-use plastic bottles used by half a million in the 2026 season alone – showing that it really is possible to conserve resources. We are also facilitating access to safe, clean drinking water with b.waterMISSION. Two tangible contributions to our mission from BWT and Windhager – For You and Planet Blue. True success does not end at the finishing line – it manifests itself in what we do for people and the planet”, says Anna Grubeck, Head of Sports Sponsorship at BWT.
A key component of the partnership is the extensive infrastructure for top-quality mineralised drinking water at all DTM race weekends. During the 2026 season, the installation of BWT Water Stations has saved 548,304 bottles since the start of the project. On DTM race weekends, up to 70 water stations across the event site and in the paddock provide spectators, teams, drivers, media representatives and officials with locally treated and mineralised water, free of charge. This cuts the number of single-use plastic and glass bottles used and reduces transport-related emissions.
“The DTM represents top-level motorsport. At the same time, we are determined to improve the sustainability of our events. Our ‘Driving Change’ joint initiative helped us to set the pace this season, raising awareness for this important issue, and we are aiming to make more progress in this respect next year,” says DTM Managing Director Claudia Wagner.
BWT and the DTM stepped up their collaboration with the “Driving Change” initiative during the 2026 season. All eight race weekends featured a range of campaigns to draw attention to topics such as avoiding waste and responsible management of natural resources.
