Red carpet instead of cockpit - Luca Engstler meets "Bully" Herbig
On 20th August, the DTM celebrated the opening of IMAX CineStar Leipzig - the first IMAX cinema in East Germany - together with partner CineStar and 500 guests. While the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo2 of Luca Engstler stood proudly in front of the cinema, the driver from TGI Team Lamborghini by GRT joined big names including Michael "Bully" Herbig, Rick Kavanian and Tutty Tran on the red carpet, before watching a VIP showing of the film "Das Kanu des Manitu". Luca Engstler: "That was a cool event and something totally different to daily life in the car and at the racetrack. It was fantastic to meet 'Bully' Herbig. He told me that he enjoys driving. Not fast, however - he prefers to cruise and enjoy the surroundings. I told him he could do that really well from in a Lamborghini."
ADAC President Christian Reinicke presents winner's trophy
Guests at the Sachsenring for the sixth DTM weekend of the season included ADAC President Christian Reinicke. The lawyer and notary from Hannover watched Sunday's race intently and presented the trophy to the winner of the twelfth DTM race of the season on Sunday.
Niners Chemnitz star Kevin Yebo visits Schubert Motorsport
Kevin Yebo, Saxony's top basket-hunter and scoring machine with basketball Bundesliga club Niners Chemnitz, visited the Sachsenring on Saturday and was amazed by the level of professionalism in the racing series. Schubert Motorsport gave the 2.07-metre center and his family a tour of the garage and offered him a glimpse behind the scenes. "I had no idea how data-based and scientific the work is that they do here. The sophisticated aerodynamics, the detailed knowledge of the tyres, the precise balance of the car - they are all details that ultimately make the difference between victory and defeat. I used to find cars cool as a young boy, although I don't actually have a driving licence," said the 29-year-old.
Former referee Felix Brych enjoys the DTM atmosphere ahead of trophy presentation
Record-breaking referee Dr. Felix Brych called time on his career this summer, after almost 500 matches in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. That has given the 50-year-old more time to follow the DTM closely again. Back in the 90s, Brych watched every race. After that, the football pitch had to take priority over the racetrack. "I am a huge DTM fan. I particularly enjoyed the taxi ride round the Sachsenring - that was a special experience," said Brych, who is one of the most successful referees in football history. At the Sachsenring, he sent the DTM drivers into Sunday's race with the "Drivers start your engines" sign, before presenting the trophy to the runner-up. Next weekend, a new task awaits Brych: on 31st August, he will perform the draw for the second round of the DFB Cup at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. "I have never done that before. Hopefully it will be as exciting as the taxi ride," said Brych with a grin.
Gymnast Pauline Schäfer-Betz flies round the Sachsenring
Pauline Schäfer-Betz visited the DTM for the first time with her sister Helene at the Nürburgring a fortnight ago. The world champion gymnast enjoyed the spectacle so much that she was back for more at the Sachsenring. On Sunday, she was taken for a spin on the 3.645-kilometre track in the Schaeffler DTM Innovation Taxi - a 640-hp Audi R8 LMS GT2. Pauline Schäfer-Benz: "I have never been in a racing car before. It was a mega cool experience. The centrifugal forces are similar to those in gymnastics, but in my sport you are going head over heels. At the end of the weekend, the 28-year-old from Chemnitz presented the trophy to the driver who finished third in Sunday's DTM race.
Motorsport expert Karsten Speck makes correct prediction
Karsten Speck was a guest of Schaeffler at the Sachsenring this weekend. The last time he visited the DTM was a long time ago: "That was 30 years back, at the Hockenheimring," the actor, singer and entertainer recalls. Born in Saxony, he has a "close connection with the circuit" and has been in the grandstands watching MotoGP on multiple occasions. Speck also proved to be something of a motor racing expert. His tip shortly before the Saturday race: "The rain plays into Marco Wittmann's hands. I reckon he will improve from twelfth on the grid and finish seventh." And expert Speck was absolutely spot on.
Former ice hockey international Flaake has fun in the Race Taxi
Jerome Flaake is a genuine DTM fan and has often been a guest at various circuits. On Saturday, the former German ice hockey international and two-time German champion took his place in a Race Taxi for the first time - and was impressed. "That ride was unbelievable. At times it felt a bit like in ice hockey, when you are travelling flat-out towards the boards and are unable to stop. However, the driver did so perfectly out on the track - and at much higher speeds," said Flaake. He also felt right at home off the track: "The pit lane is cool, the event is superbly organised. I had a lot of fun at the Sachsenring."
