Finale of the Prototype Cup Germany: Who will be the first champion?

  • Dienst / Besler travel to Hockenheim as championship leaders
  • Mühlner duo Munding / Lüthen sets sights on victory in the Junior and Trophy competitions
  • Five new drivers and one new team enhance the field at the finale

Munich. This weekend (21st to 23rd October), the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg hosts the finale of the 2022 Prototype Cup Germany. For the second time this season, the new series for LMP3 cars, which was launched this year, features on the same bill as the German GT Championship. Mavin Dienst (25/Lampertheim) and Berkay Besler (23/TUR, both Toksport WRT) arrive at the motordrome near Heidelberg with the best chance of winning the title. They currently hold a 25.5-point lead over the pairing of Donar Munding (20/Stuttgart) and Matthias Lüthen (41/Hamburg, both Mühlner Motorsport) in the overall standings. Munding and Lüthen are favourites to take victory in the Junior (Munding) and Trophy (Lüthen) competitions. Five new drivers join the field for the final weekend of the season: Julien Schell (43/FRA, Pegasus Racing), Martin Berry (45/AUS, Rinaldi Racing), Rory Penttinen (42/FIN, MRS GT-Racing), Lion Düker (20/Rottweil) and Moritz Löhner (23/Munich, both Reiter Engineering). For Löhner, the three-time ADAC GT Masters eSports Champion, this is the first race weekend on the support programme of the ADAC GT Masters. Plus, the MRS GT-Racing team is set to make its debut in the Prototype Cup Germany. Both races will be streamed live and free at youtube.com/adac, adac.de/motorsport and youtube.com/24hseries.

Marvin Dienst is no stranger to winning the title in his first year in a racing series. He achieved this back in his ADAC Formula 4 days, and is hungry to repeat the feat now. However, he is not at all nervous about the prospect. “I feel relaxed coming into the weekend, as I know the car and the circuit. Despite this, together with my team-mate Berkay, I will be doing everything I can to wrap up the title.” The Toksport WRT duo has won four races so far this season – more than anyone else. They also finished third at the Lausitzring, while their only failure to finish came at the Nürburgring.

Victory at the Lausitzring went to Munding and Lüthen. Junior driver Munding and Lüthen, a latecomer to motorsport, have improved consistently over the course of the season: while fourth place was their best result at the season-opener at Spa-Francorchamps, the Mühlner duo finished runner-up at the Nürburgring to make their first appearance on the podium. They then took their maiden win in Lusatia. This has catapulted Hamburg’s Lüthen into first place in the Trophy competition, ahead of Torsten Kratz (51/Mönchengladbach, WTM Racing). Stuttgart-based Munding is sitting pretty at the top of the Junior table, with Dienst and Besler his closest rivals.

Five new drivers are expected to line up in the final two races of the Prototype Cup Germany. Julien Schell from France is team principal of Pegasus Racing and will support his driver Thibaut Ehrhart (21/FRA). Australian Martin Berry shares the cockpit with Oscar Tunjo (26/COL). Finland’s Rory Penttinen will make his Prototype Cup Germany debut together with the MRS GT-Racing team, while Germans Lion Düker and Moritz Löhner form a new pairing for Reiter Engineering.
