- Spa winner Thomas Ambiel looking forward to his home event
- Both qualifying sessions and races available via livestream
Munich. The Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg is the venue for round two of the 2025 Prototype Cup Germany this coming weekend (9th to 11th May). Danny Soufi (21/USA) and Pavel Lefterov (27/BUL, both Konrad Motorsport) travel to the circuit near Mannheim as championship leaders. In second place after the season opener at Spa-Francorchamps are Riccardo Leone Cirelli (17/ITA) and Mathias Bjerre Jakobsen (18/DEN, both BWT Mücke Motorsport), while third place is currently occupied by Trophy driver Thomas Ambiel (45/Eppingen, Rinaldi Racing). Joining the field in Hockenheim are reigning champion Valentino Catalano (19/Westheim), LMP3 debutant Jérémy Siffert (21/SUI) and Jacob Erlbacher (24/Böblingen, all Gebhardt Intralogistics Motorsport). There will once again be a free livestream of this event at
youtube.com/adacmotorsports showing the two qualifying sessions and both races.
The two races at the Hockenheimring, which feature on the programme at the ADAC Hockenheim Historic weekend, are the first of the 2025 Prototype Cup Germany to be held on German soil. They are also a real home outing for the Gebhardt Intralogistics Motorsport team, which is based in nearby Sinsheim. Fritz Gebhardt’s outfit was crowned champion in both the Driver and Team competitions last year, but endured a disappointing start to the season without a single podium. The team has now called on Catalano for Hockenheim. The 19-year-old takes his place alongside Mikkel C. Johansen (37/DEN, Gebhardt Intralogistics Motorsport), who was partnered by Oscar Tunjo (29/COL) at Spa-Francorchamps. Columbian Tunjo, who set the fastest lap time ever in an LMP3 car at the Ardennes Rollercoaster, will be at the wheel of another Duqueine for the Badischer Motorsport Club team as a solo starter. Gebhardt Intralogistics Motorsport will also roll out the Ginetta again, in which Siffert will make his debut in the LMP3 class. The grandson of Swiss racing legend Jo Siffert will share the driving duties with the experienced Erlbacher.
Hockenheim is also a home event for Eppenheim’s Ambiel, a surprise winner at Spa-Francorchamps. “It is actually more than that, as Hockenheim is a very special place for me. As a lad, I used to stand against the fence trying to watch the Formula 1 cars, as I could not afford a ticket at the time.” To ensure he produces a good performance at this special venue, Ambiel has brought 45-year-old Jörg Müller on board. “I have known Jörg for a long time and asked him whether he would like to support me. He said yes immediately, which I was delighted about. He is a real racer, who has driven many different cars over the course of his career – from Formula 1 to various LMP sports cars. Jörg will take on the role of my race engineer.”
Although Ambiel already knows how it feels to win in the Prototype Cup Germany, his goals remain modest. “I want to drive two serious races and finish twice. On top of that, I also want to implement what the team told me after Spa, and put into practice the tips that Jörg will give me in Hockenheim. Furthermore, I met David Schumacher at the Nürburgring last weekend, and he also gave me some valuable advice. Hopefully I can use that to improve, particularly in qualifying.”
Ambiel will again come up against some stiff opposition, including the flying youngsters from BWT Mücke Motorsport. Cirelli / Jakobsen and Mattis Pluschkell (20/Elmenhorst) / Maksymilian Angelard (17/POL, both BWT Mücke Motorsport) have already shown what they are capable of with podium finishes in Belgium. They now have their sights set on their first victory of the year. Last year, Hockenheim was a happy hunting ground for the Berlin-based team; back then, they won two of the three races. The Konrad duo of Soufi and Lefterov arrives in Hockenheim on the back of two podiums, including victory in the opening heat at Spa-Francorchamps. Soufi finished runner-up in the series alongside Torsten Kratz last year, and is hungry to go one better this season.
