Phoenix Audi and SaReNi Camaro at ADAC GT Masters finale

  • Guest start for Phoenix Racing Audi R8
  • Sports car star Oliver Gavin in Camaro
  • Luca Ludwig and Thomas Jäger return to ADAC GT Masters

The ADAC GT Masters Hockenheim finale (September 27th-29th) is a season highlight on several counts and not just because of the title fight that is hotting up nicely. To mark the finale (both races live on kabel eins Saturday/Sunday, from 12:00pm onwards) the Super Sports Cars League will feature one of the best ever line-ups before heading off into the winter break. Phoenix Racing will field an Audi, whilst Camaro team SaReNi United will have British sports car star Oliver Gavin on board in the ADAC GT Masters.

Comeback for Phoenix Racing in Audi R8

Phoenix Racing will use the finale for a guest start in an Audi R8. The team from the Nürburgring has already previously won five ADAC GT Masters races and will field a Belgian driver duo. Race winner at Spa-Francorchamps in May Nico Verdonck (27, Belgium) returns to the Super Sports Cars League in the Audi R8, sharing the drive with Enzo Ide (22, Belgium). The final races in Hockenheim have always been good for Ernst Moser’s team. Two years ago, the Audi outfit won the last race of the season there, while Martin Tomczyk was wrapping up the DTM title for Phoenix. This weekend, Phoenix has the chance to repeat the feat since Mike Rockenfeller in the team’s Audi RS5 has title chances in the DTM race at Zandvoort.

Sports car ace Oliver Gavin in Chevrolet Camaro

SaReNi United will make another appearance at Hockenheim with the American Chevrolet Camaro steam hammer. Albert von Thurn und Taxis (30, Germany) will line up in the 650-bhp muscle car with sports car star Oliver Gavin (40, Great Britain). This is the second start in the ADAC GT Masters for the reigning GT champion from the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and Chevrolet works driver since competing at the Red Bull Ring last year.

SaReNi team manager Tomas Enge remains very positive ahead of the Camaro’s third outing this season: “The development of a racing car is tricky and is a long and involved process. We just have to take our time and test extensively. We have made a bit more progress with the new YOKOHAMA tyres that have recently been made available to us. It is important that we find the connection to the midfield and stop finding ourselves placed among cars lower down the field. The Camaro GT3 definitely has what it takes.”

Thomas Jäger and Luca Ludwig at Polarweiss Racing

The Mercedes- Benz SLS AMG prepared by Polarweiss Racing has two new faces to support Maximilian Buhk (20, Germany) and Maximilian Götz (27, Germany), who are placed second in the title fight. Since regular drivers Sergey Afanasiev (25, Russia ) and Andreas Simonsen (23, Sweden) have to miss the final weekend due to a clash of dates, two former ADAC GT Masters race winners, Luca Ludwig (24, Germany) and Thomas Jäger (36, Germany) will take their cockpit in the gullwing. This will be Ludwig’s first time in the ADAC GT Masters in a Mercedes- Benz SLS AMG. Jäger, however, achieved a victory in the SLS AMG two years ago.

Michael Christensen paired with Nicolas Armindo in Porsche

After missing a race, Biene Maja, the black and yellow 911 of Geyer & Weinig / Schütz Motorsport returns in time for the team’s home race in Hockenheim. However, the outfit led by Christian Schütz has a new driver pairing for the finale. Since regular driver Christian Engelhart (26, Germany) has other commitments, Porsche protégé Michael Christensen (23, Denmark) will step in, teaming up with Nicolas Armindo (31, France). This will be Christensen’s second appearance this year in the Super Sports Cars League since the Nürburgring race.
