21.08.2016 - ADAC GT Masters

Paddock radar from the ADAC GT Masters at Zandvoort

  • Fabian Hamprecht as air chauffeur for team-mates
  • 100th ADAC GT Masters race for Daniel Keilwitz at Zandvoort
  • Masters of Formula 3 on the support programme

Air Hamprecht: Fabian Hamprecht, Daniel Abt and Marco Holzer chose perhaps the most unusual mode of transport for their journey to the ADAC GT Masters race weekend at Zandvoort. It was a flight in a 310-horsepower Cessna 400 Corvalis from the airstrip at Memmingen im Allgäu to Rotterdam. At the joystick was Fabian Hamprecht. The 21-year-old Bentley driver holds a professional flying licence. All he needs to do now is train for a specific type of jet aircraft, then he can fulfil his long-term ambition of becoming a pilot for one of the major airlines: "This was the second time I've flown to a race; the first was to the Sachsenring in 2015. I started off from Salzburg and stopped at Memmingen to pick Daniel and Marco up. The pair of them were quite nervous, because I had initially told them my instructor would be accompanying us. Unfortunately, he had to back out. But they quickly calmed down. They actually slept for much of the flight." If you are interested in seeing some amusing photos of the three aviators, take a look at Daniel Abt's Vlog #30 (Title: Was this a really good idea?!). Double shift: For Audi driver Frédéric Vervisch and Nissan man Christiaan Frankenhout, two ADAC GT Masters races on the Zandvoort weekend were not enough. Both of them also competed in a 24-hour race being held at the same time at Zolder, which meant a lot of commuting between Belgium and the Netherlands.

Capricious weather: The weather forecasters were kept busy this weekend as the conditions changed by the minute, alternating between gorgeous beach weather and torrential downpours. The drivers and teams faced the constant challenge of having to adjust the setup for the prevailing weather.

Formula 3 stars at Zandvoort: For the second consecutive year, the Masters of Formula 3 was staged as part of the ADAC GT Masters weekend at Zandvoort. This Formula 3 race is by invitation only, and past winners have included Lewis Hamilton, Nico Hülkenberg and Max Verstappen. This weekend saw the return of a familiar face from the ADAC GT Masters scene: Joel Eriksson, runner-up in last year's ADAC Formula 4, won the race and the 2016 Master of Formula 3.

Three questions for Daniel Keilwitz

Welcome to the centenary club! Corvette driver Daniel Keilwitz contested his 100th ADAC GT Masters race on Sunday. The Corvette man thus becomes a member of an exclusive club - the only other drivers who can boast more starts than Keilwitz are Sebastian Asch (119) and Toni Seiler (113).

Congratulations on your 100th ADAC GT Masters race. How well do you remember at your first ADAC GT Masters race weekend?
"Very well, in fact, because I actually made a podium appearance at the first attempt. That was in an Ascari as co-driver to Marcel Leipert at the Lausitzring in 2009. In the first race, we came sixth, and in the second race we finished in third place. It was also the first podium for an Ascari in the series."

Which was your most memorable race?
"That was definitely the final race at Hockenheim in 2013. We were in contention for the title, and I got spun round on the first lap, which put me at the back of the field. The title seemed to be lost and our situation hopeless. We then staged a furious charge up the field and fought our way back to the front. Diego Alessi and I then won the title. Although we didn't win the race itself, it was by far my most emotional race."

Your 17 victories so far make you the driver with the most wins in the history of the series. Which of your recent triumphs means the most to you?
"In the years 2012 and 2013, I had a wonderful run of successes with Diego Alessi. The most beautiful victory was perhaps the first. That was in 2012 here at Zandvoort when Diego Alessi and I won our first race together in a Corvette by a very narrow margin."
