Father and son
Ex-Formula 1 driver and Indy 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya (44, COL) came to the Nürburgring to support his son, 15-year-old Sebastian, making his ADAC Formula 4 debut at the circuit in the Eifel. Montoya Junior started Sunday's race in the ADAC High-Speed Academy from pole position.
Former swimming star at the 'Ring'
Former swimming world champion Mark Warnecke (50) was at the Nürburgring to watch the ADAC GT Masters. The motor racing fan is a Porsche Carrera Cup competitor and held up the 'Start your Engines' sign sponsored by series partner Eibach before the start of Saturday's race in the Super Sports Car League.
Spectators at the circuit in the Eifel
Spectators were allowed to come to the Nürburgring for a race weekend for the first time this season. Jörg Helten, Member of the Board of ADAC SE, was one of the spectators at the second round of the ADAC GT Masters season. On Sunday, Helten sent the field on its way by holding up the 'Start your Engines' sign. Michael Mews, Chief Sales Officer of ADAC GT Masters partner Postcon, was also at the circuit.
Staying safe
At 14 metres wide, the ADAC GT Masters probably has the largest podium in motor racing this season. The podium for the awards ceremony has to be this size in order to comply with minimum distances enforced by the corona crisis. There is no handover of trophies in the traditional manner, but rest assured, the winners do get their trophies and Schumacher sparkling wine. The podium was designed and built by ADAC GT Masters partner FaberExposize.
ADAC GT Masters eSports championship powered by EnBW mobility+
A strong partnership: The 2020 ADAC GT Masters eSports Championship is now powered by EnBW mobility+. The second race of the professional ADAC eSports series that started on the virtual Nürburgring on Saturday was won by Poland's Nikodem Wisniewski (Williams Esports) with a supreme, tactical and skilful performance. He finished ahead of Tim Jarschel (Euronics Gaming) and as a result, moves into first place overall after coming second in the first round. Lausitzring winner Jack Keithley (Williams Esports) completed the party on the podium. By coming home fourth and seventh, last year's champions Moritz Löhner and Kuba Brzezinski helped the eSports team fielded by the famous Formula 1 Williams outfit achieve another impressive team result.
Exclusive reward for pole-sitters
The Pirelli Pole Position Award was launched for the first time at the Nürburgring. This special award now goes to the fastest driver in qualifying and is sponsored by Pirelli, exclusive tyre partners of the ADAC GT Masters, the ADAC GT4 Germany and the ADAC Formula 4. Successful drivers also receive a top-quality Montblanc case.
Very special sight-seeing trip
ADAC GT Masters defending champion Kelvin van der Linde made a very special and unusual sight-seeing trip around Berlin this week. The South African posted a lap around the city centre at the wheel of an Audi Formula E racing car. Starting out from Alexanderplatz, van der Linde drove first to the Reichstag, then across Straße des 17. Juni and past Potsdamer Platz. Posing for photos in front of the Brandenburg Gate was the highlight of his outing. "That was great fun," said van der Linde.
New Pirelli tyres
Pirelli is supplying the ADAC GT Masters with new tyres this year. "The ADAC GT Masters is one of the world's strongest GT3 series," said Michael Wendt, CEO of Pirelli Deutschland. "The opening rounds were thrilling and left everyone wanting more." Pirelli have been exclusive tyre suppliers to the Super Sports Car League since 2015. The new P-Zero DHE tyre is a development of the previous version and should make the race action even more spectacular. Technology used by Pirelli in Formula 1 was also deployed in its development, underlining once again the importance the company attaches to GT racing and the subsequent transfer of technology from racetrack to road. "It serves as an open-air laboratory for the development of high-performance tyres for series production vehicles," said Matteo Braga, Pirelli Circuit Activity Manager. The P Zero DHE comes in two sizes. The Pirelli wet-weather tyres comply with the 2019 spec. Pirelli supplies between 800 and 1,000 tyres, including full wets and slicks, to competitors at each ADAC GT Masters race weekend.
