- Bernadine van der Linde arrives to support sons Kelvin and Sheldon
- YACO Racing invite 300 guests to home race
Cheered on by mum: Kelvin van der Linde (21, ZA, Aust Motorsport) and his brother Sheldon (18, ZA, Aust Motorsport) have their biggest fan in attendance at the Sachsenring. Their mother, Bernadine van der Linde, has made a special trip from Johannesburg to see her sons share the cockpit of a racing car for the first time. "I go to three or four races per season," said the 46-year-old South African. She certainly inspired her sons on Saturday, when the Audi R8 LMS duo finished Race 1 on the Junior class podium. Sheldon also had a maiden win in the ADAC TCR Germany series.
Home fixture: YACO Racing are enjoying extra support during the race weekend at the Sachsenring. The Plauen-based outfit has handed out 300 complimentary tickets for this home fixture. As a result, we can expect Philip Geipel (30, DEU) and Rahel Frey (31, CH, both YACO Racing) in their Audi R8 LMS to get a specially rousing reception. The team has also brought along 2,000 bright green hats in YACO Racing livery for distribution among the spectators in the paddock.
Moonlighting: During the course of the ADAC GT Masters weekend at the Sachsenring, SPORT1 commentator Patrick Simon is receiving support from the paddock. Christopher Mies (28, DEU, Montaplast by Land Motorsport) and Sebastian Asch (31, DEU, BWT Mücke Motorsport) joined him in the box as co-commentators for Saturday's race. On Sunday, it is the turn of Luca Stolz (22, DEU, Mercedes-AMG Team ZAKSPEED) and Philipp Eng (27, AUT, BMW Team Schnitzer).
Family history: The race weekend at the Sachsenring has a special significance for Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky (24, SWE, Audi Sport racing academy). Her grandfather Freddy Kottulinsky, who died in 2010, lived in Saxony for many years. He was also a successful racing driver, whose triumphs included a win in the 1980 Paris-Dakar Rally. "He took an abiding interest in this racetrack and frequently ran driving courses on behalf of Audi at the Sachsenring," Mikaela told us.
Guest with a special interest: Jost Capito, who took over the management of Volkswagen R GmbH on 1st June, was present for the race weekend at the Sachsenring. The former Volkswagen Motorsport Director was particularly interested in the ADAC TCR Germany series, in which up to nine Volkswagen Golf GTI TCRs are competing.
Milestone race: Christopher Haase (29, DEU, Montaplast by Land Motorsport) contested his 90th race in the Super Sports Car League on Saturday. His eleven victories in the ADAC GT Masters make the 2007 champion the third most successful contestant in the history of the racing series which, coincidentally, has been running since 2007.
