In front of record crowds: MotoGP world champion Fabio Quartararo is crowned the new “King of the Ring”

• Yamaha rider wins the Grand Prix of Germany in front of over 232,000 spectators

Hohenstein-Ernstthal. The new “King of the Ring” is Fabio Quartararo. The French MotoGP world champion claimed his third win of the season in the 2022 LIQUI MOLY Motorcycle Grand Prix of Germany at the Sachsenring and pulled further clear at the top of the world championship in the process. After a brilliant display in front of a record-breaking weekend crowd of 232,202 spectators, the Yamaha factory rider took the chequered flag in first place on Sunday. His compatriot, Ducati rider Johann Zarco, followed him home 4.939 seconds later in second place. “I am tired, but happy to have won against this backdrop. I have not felt so well all weekend, and I had a bit of a cough before the race,” said Quartararo after the race. “We opted for a medium tyre on the rear. That was pretty risky. The tyre then degraded much more than I had expected in the race.”

The battle for the final spot on the podium was decided in the closing stages of the demanding German grand prix. Australian Ducati factory rider Jack Miller came out on top against Spain’s Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia). Local favourite Stefan Bradl, standing in for the former “King of the Ring” Marc Marquez, narrowly missed out on the points, finishing 16th at his home event.

Augusto Fernandez from Spain dominate the Moto2 race. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider crossed the finish line with a comfortable lead of 7.704 seconds after 28 laps of racing. “My start from the front row was not the best, but I found a really good rhythm in the race. Thank you to my team for this outstanding bike and this fantastic weekend. We are by no means done yet,” said the winner.

In the four-way battle to be the best of the rest, local favourite Marcel Schrötter (LIQUI MOLY IntactGP) set the fans’ pulses racing. A lightning-quick start initially catapulted the German into second place, but he soon lost this position again. In the fiercely-contested closing stages, Schrötter lost out to Fernandez’s Spanish team-mate Pedro Acosta and Britain’s Sam Lowes (Elf Marc VDS Racing). The local lad finished fourth, ahead of Fermin Aldeguer (Lightech Speed Up) from Spain, and was given a raucous reception by the fans on his warm-down lap.

In the Moto3 class, Spain’s Izan Guevara took a commanding victory. The rider from the GASGAS Aspar team led the field from the start and soon pulled clear of the chasing pack. The 17-year-old went on to finish 4.853 seconds ahead of his closest rival. Behind him, three riders battled it out for second place, with Italy’s Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing) coming out on top. Third place went to Guevara’s Spanish team-mate Sergio Garcia. “That was an incredible race! This is the fifth time in a row that I have made it onto the podium. I now trail Sergio by just seven points,” said a jubilant Guevara after his third win of the season.
