On Your Marks, Ready ... ADAC Rallye Deutschland 2013

  • The latest news and info about the German WRC event
  • Great Volkswagen and ADAC fan promotion at the Arena Panzerplatte
  • Medal of Honour for rally staffer Henning R. Wünsch
  • Red Bull Stratos legend Felix Baumgartner at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland

Munich/Trier, 17. August 2013 – Rally fever is on the rise in Germany. ADAC Rallye Deutschland – one of the highlights on the international rally-racing calender is about to start in just a few days time. An expected 200,000 spectators are in for spectacular drifts from WRC aces such as Sébastien Ogier or Mikko Hirvonen and German driver Sepp Wiegand. This year’s German event on the FIA World Rally Championship awaits the spectators and fans with several innovations.

The most important innovations

For the first time ever, the 2013 ADAC Rallye Deutschland will open with a drivers’ presentation on Roncalliplatz directly next to the Cologne cathedral. After the spectacular opening in down-town Cologne, the drivers face two all new Special Stages. First, there is the Blankenheim Special Stage about an hour’s drive south-west of Cologne. This is the first ADAC Rallye Deutschland Special Stage in the Eifel region north of Trier. The second new Special Stage (Sauertal) takes the rally almost to the border of Luxembourg. New sections have been added to several other Special Stages. Unlike 2012, the Peterberg Special Stage will be run from the other end.

Besides in the locations and itineraries, there are some innovations on the side of the competitors. In particular, the German rally fans can look forward to the first “home rally” of a German works team, Volkswagen having joined the WRC with their Polo R WRC. In 2013, the German manufacturer is competing in its first complete season in the FIA World Rally Championship. After dominating the previous two rallies on the calendar, Volkswagen team aims at enthusing their fans at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland as well. VW driver Sébastien Ogier theoretically has the opportunity to secure his 2013 title as early as the German rally. He would just have to stay 22 points ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala and Thierry Neuville.

Another first this year is the ADAC OPEL Rallye Cup to be held as a supporting event of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. The new single-brand cup and its young rally drivers will have their first great moment in front of a large international audience at the German WRC event. In addition to the WRC, WRC2, WRC3 and Junior WRC drivers, the drivers of the German rally championship DRM, the CITROËN DS3 R1 Trophy and drivers in historic rally cars will all compete during the ADAC Rallye Deutschland weekend.

Drivers’ presentation at the Cologne cathedral (Roncalli-Platz, Thursday, 22 August 2013, 16:00 hours).

The ADAC Rallye Deutschland will open with a new highlight for the spectators: the great drivers’ presentation next to the Cologne cathedral. Leading up to the moment when the first driver rolls up to the presentation podium in his awesome rally car to be introduced to the audience, the spectators will be entertained with a colourful pre-show hosted by sports presenter Andrea Kaiser and presenter Markus Schramm. In short interviews, the spectators will learn all there is to know about the German WRC event.

After the German anthem and the official drivers’ presentation, the competitors will proceed through the cordon of spectators to Harry Blum square near the Rhine where they will start on a predefined section route to the first Special Stage. Access to the drivers’ presentation on Roncalliplatz near the Cologne cathedral is free.

Podium ceremony at the Porta Nigra gate in Trier (Sunday, 25 August 2013, 14:00 hours).

The ancient Porta Nigra gate in Trier will again form the unique backdrop to the podium cere-mony of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland, where the fans will have ample opportunity to celebrate their rally heroes. Before the national anthem for the winner and the obligatory champagne showers after the ceremony, the spectators are in for a pre-show including interviews, show acts presented by Red Bull and live music.

With the successful contenders in the rally, the participants in the great ADAC Rallye Deutschland sweepstakes will likewise be looking impatiently forward to the Trier finale. The main prizes in the on-line sweepstakes, including a brand-new Opel ADAM valued at €20,000 and original rally overall worn by Sébastien Ogier at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland, will be handed out here. To take their chances in the sweepstakes, fans should log onto www.adac.de/motorsport and click the ADAC Rallye Deutschland COMPETITION banner to register.

The greatest Arena Panzerplatte ever (Saturday, 24 August 2013)

The Special Stages at the military range at Baumholder have always been a must for all ADAC Rallye Deutschland fans. This year, the spectacular chase around Arena Panzerplatte will offer even more action. Our promise to the fans: Together with Volkswagen, ADAC will bring to life the greatest ever Arena Panzerplatte.

A special Panzerplatte TV studio will be set up at this very special Special Stage. The rally action between the notorious “Hinkelstein” boulders will be captured on live camera and projected directly on a huge 80 square meter video screen. This will allow the fans to catch every detail of the race even in duplicate. The Fan TV organised by Volkswagen will provide the spectators on site and the viewers at home with news, info and the drivers’ times. Dieter Depping, with three wins the most successful competitor in the ADAC Rallye Deutschland next to Sébastien Loeb, will be on-site as Fan TV expert. Before and between the Special Stages the show always goes on: Among other highlights, the spectators can look forward to the French Red Bull trial rider Julien Dupon’s breathtaking trial demonstrations. Plus many other big and small fan promotions and entertainment to make “the greatest ever Arena Panzerplatte” a worthy spectacle. Also, a few media personalities have announced their attendance: “Mr Red Bull Stratos” Felix Baumgartner and actor Erol Sander will be there to watch the spectacle of Arena Panzerplatte live as excited as any other fan.

Service Park Trier

With the drivers’ presentation, the special stages and the podium ceremony, the Messepark Trier is worth a visit any day of the event. The fairgrounds south-west of the Trier city centre are the hub of the action during the whole rally. This is where the drivers turn in for their 15-minute morning service, the 30-minute noon-time service and the 45-minute night-time flexi service. There is nowhere better to get close to the drivers or watch them and their crews at work or get autographs. At the Service Park fans will also find the fan shops, info point, food and refreshments, the participating manufacturers’ promotion stands, a video screen with live timing, sanitary facilities, as well as a medical station and many other services.
