13.08.2016 - ADAC Rallye Deutschland

It's safety first at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland

  • Rally spectators play a crucial role in making the event safer
  • Essential safety tips for visitors to the German WRC event
  • Safety as a task for the organisers and the role of the marshals

Munich/Trier, 13 August 2016 - Action? Yes, but it's got to be safe! - this combination is one of the declared goals of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. The spectators' correct behaviour is crucial to the safety of any rally event - the ADAC Rallye Deutschland being no exception. In addition to intelligent planning of the itinerary and thorough instruction of the marshals, the ADAC safety concept also relies on sharpening the rally spectators' awareness and trusting their self-responsibility. ADAC appeals to the fans to familiarise themselves with the local conditions prior to their visit. "We want to make spectators aware that they are a very important part of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. With their exemplary behaviour, looking after their own safety, they play a crucial role in the smooth running of the event. Spectators entering the safety zones and no-go areas not only put their own health at risk, but also jeopardize the continuity of the event, potentially even causing a Special Stage to be aborted", says Clerk of the Course Alfred Rommelfanger.

The ADAC Rallye Deutschland website is a central platform for fans to retrieve the necessary information prior to the rally. The "Zuschauer" (spectators) section at www.adac.de/rallye-deutschland assembles all the essential safety notices. It also features 2014 champion Thierry Neuville in a safety video which illustrates the safety tips in a very descriptive manner (note: media offices may link to the video or embed it free of charge). Inspired by the success of the German safety video, ADAC also produced a FIA-commissioned international video about spectator safety in rallying, which you can watch on the FIA YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IshXBw3yPzI

The ten top safety tips for ADAC Rallye Deutschland spectators:

  • Always stay in the designated spectator areas. They are marked by a yellow plastic fence. Any other areas are no-go areas and must not be entered.
  • Follow the marshals' instructions. The stewards will be pleased to assist you if you require medical or other help.
  • Never enter the track and always keep the start and finish areas clear.
  • Do not remove any signs or arrows.
  • Never drive cars or recreational vehicles on the Special Stages, not even the night before!
  • Keep an eye on your children.
  • Do not bring dogs to the rally.
  • Do not light campfires.
  • Unmanned aircraft (drones) are strictly forbidden.
  • Do not block any access or escape routes with your vehicle.

  • Strategy of education and information
To make fans aware at an early stage, they will receive a multilingual spectator map with brief, easy-to-understand safety instructions along with the purchase of their rally passes. The map shows which areas are accessible and where the no-go areas are located. Thanks to a uniform, easily recognisable structure and clear signposting, fans visiting a Special Stage (SS) will also know immediately what is allowed and what isn't.

    Spectator safety working group
The spectator safety working group has been an integral part of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland safety concept since 2014. Its main purpose is to exchange experiences: Chaired by the Clerk of the Course, the group of persons in charge of all the various aspects of the rally, from organisation to planning and spectator management to Special Stage management, meets regularly. Looking beyond their own areas of specialization, they jointly discuss ways to keep optimising spectator safety.
