Be there live when they celebrate: SS Sauertal to be the new Power Stage at the 2016 ADAC Rallye Deutschland

  • New showdown at the German FIA WRC event
  • Challenging stage for spectacular fights to win WRC extra points

Munich/Trier, 10 June 2016 – Never a dull moment at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland: not for the drivers and not for the fans. To make this promise a reality, the organisers of the German WRC stint develop their rally further each year. True enough in 2016. The organising team headed by Clerk of the Course Alfred Rommelfanger has introduced some exciting new features again. The numerous highlights include a new Power Stage. For the first time, the Sauertal Special Stage will be the setting of the spectacular showdown in this rally. After this final SS in the rally, one team will celebrate its win of the 2016 German WRC rally and the fastest three can celebrate additional WRC points for the concluding Power Stage.

The Sauertal SS in the southern reaches of the Eiffel hill-country has been part of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland itinerary since 2013. As before the 2016 SS starts north of the village of Trierweiler, in the Trier-Saarburg district. The itinerary takes the drivers south then west towards and close to the Luxembourg border. Then the SS turns north along the river Sauer, which forms the natural border. A permanent succession of up and down passages takes the drivers over fast country roads and narrow asphalt service roads. Quite a few nasty 90° turns challenge the drivers along this itinerary. After a tough 14.84km, the rally cars reach the finish line just outside the village of Olk.

To offer the spectators prime viewing at the Sauertal SS, four extensive spectator areas will be set up along the route (Udelfangen Arena, Trierweiler, Wintersdorfer Berg and Kersch). From the Kersch spectator area, the public will be able to follow the rally cars into the finish line on a length of over one kilometre. They can watch the decisive finale in the Power Stage and in the entire 2016 ADAC Rallye Deutschland live.

With the designation of the Sauertal Power Stage for the 2016 ADAC Rallye Deutschland, this event moves from the traditional Friday slot to Sunday 21 August 2016, the final rally day. On this day, the Sauertal SS is on the schedule twice. First starting at 8:42 in the morning and then as The Power Stage starting at 12:08 hours. Across the finish line, the drivers will start celebrating even before the official podium ceremony starts at the historic Porta Nigra gate in downtown Trier at 15:00 hours.

The Power Stage format was introduced to FIA WRC rallies in 2011. It brings an extra three points to the fastest team, two to the second and one to the third. If the overall winners also top the Power Stage, their total take is 28 points from one rally event. Normally, Power Stages are approx. 15km long. Basically one extended, exhilarating sprint. Since the participants start into the Power Stage in the reverse order of the current WRC standings, the extra points as well as the whole rally are often settled only when the last driver crosses the finish line.
