Munich/Trier, 19 August 2014 - The eyes of the rally world are upon Germany: In just a few days, the ADAC Rallye Deutschland - the ninth event of the 2014 FIA Word Rally Championship - will kick off with the Show Start in front of the ancient Roman Porta Nigra gate in Trier. From 21 to 24 August 2014, Sébastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala, Thierry Neuville, Mikko Hirvonen and all the other WRC stars will be competing for valuable championship points in 18 challenging Special Stages. There will be plenty of treats, from a record starting grid of 89 vehicles to numerous innovations which this motor sport highlight has in store not only for the fans, but also for the participants
New Special Stages: Waxweiler and Sprint test on the Arena Panzerplatte
This year, sections of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland will run close to the Belgian border. On Friday (22 August 2014), the completely new Waxweiler Special Stage will take the participants on a selective course through the Eifel hills. A big premiere this year is the additional, approx. 3km long Sprint test at the Arena Panzerplatte on Saturday (23 August 2014). The course on the Baumholder military range is laid out so that the fans can overlook almost the entire distance from one location, thus giving them a maximum of rally action. The legendary Panzerplatte Stage will combine the best sections from the past four years. On top of that, numerous new stretches will add excitement to the other Special Stages.
Rally Capital Trier: Show Start, Podium and Service Park
For four days, Trier will be the hub of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. The official Show Start will take place Thursday night (21 August 2014) at the Porta Nigra. Fans can look forward to an attractive programme, including an autograph signing session with the top stars of the WRC, scheduled for 19:00 hours at the nearby Hauptmarkt. They will also get to see the WRC cars up close. Then the official part will begin in front of the Porta Nigra, with informative live interviews, DJ entertainment and captivating trailers highlighting the rally on an extra-large video screen. The presentation of the 15 best WRC drivers in reverse order of WRC standings will be the highlight of the evening: Each pairing will be announced by a trailer and then roll over the starting ramp in their car in front of the Roman gate, illuminated to great effect. The presentation of the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup participants will conclude the Show Start.
The ADAC Rallye Deutschland will return once more to the Porta Nigra on Sunday (24 August 2014, 14:30 hours) to finally celebrate its winners. Volkswagen has announced an additional surprise for the fans if the German manufacturer manages to secure the World Championship at this WRC event on home territory (note: further information in this release). The lucky winners of the big ADAC Rallye Deutschland sweepstake will also receive their prizes in front of the Roman gate - such as an Opel Adam worth €20,000. You may enter the sweepstake until Saturday, 23 August 2014, 18:00 hours at www.adac.de/rallye-deutschland. Admission is free to both the Show Start and the podium ceremony.
Trier is also home to the Service Park at the fairgrounds, providing a close-up rally experience every day. There is a TV studio there with a video wall on which the fans can see the rally action and get all the regular updates on the current standings. The central live stage will be used for manufacturer's presentations and autograph signing sessions. The Service Park also accommodates the fan shops, the info point, food and refreshments stations, sanitary facilities, as well as a medical station and other services. At the Service Park, fans will also stand the best chance to watch the teams at work during the 15-minute morning service, the 30-minute noon-time service and the 45-minute night-time flexi service.
Scheduled arrival times for the first cars at the Service Park in Trier:
Thursday, 21 August 2014; open around the clock; no set service times.
Friday, 22 August 2014, 13:34 hours 18:48 hours
Saturday, 23 August 2014, 06:40 hours, 13:18 hours and 19:29 hours
Sunday, 24 August 2014, 06:20 hours, 09:32 hours and 13:26 hours
Fan Highlight: Arena Panzerplatte
All true rally fans will love the Panzerplatte. On Saturday, 23 August 2014, they can enjoy a maximum of rally sport in an incomparable arena-like atmosphere. This year, there is also the added bonus of a new Sprint test. However, this is by no means everything that makes the action on the Baumholder military range a fan highlight. The secret of its success is a maximum of spectator friendliness and closeness to the fans.
For instance, there will be a Panzerplatte TV studio "powered by Volkswagen". The rally action between the notorious "Hinkelstein" boulders will be captured on live camera and projected directly on a huge 100 square meter video screen. The Fan TV programme will provide the spectators on site and the viewers at home with news, info and the drivers' times. Moreover, several fan activities are scheduled before and between the Special Stages: For instance, the crowd can look forward to a spectacular FMX Motocross Show courtesy of Red Bull.
A bevy of rally legends in original rally cars from way back when
Another Panzerplatte highlight is a "rolling" autograph session with numerous rally legends in their rally cars from yesteryear. The signatures of Jacky Ickx, Stig Blomquist, Hannu Mikkola, Michele Mouton, Ari Vatanen, Juha Kankkunen, Per Eklund, Timo Salonen, Armin Schwarz, Harald Demuth, Kalle Grundel, Dieter Depping and Klaus Fritzinger will be available for autograph hunters. On Saturday, 23 August 2014, between 13:00 hours and 14:00 hours, they will drive around the track in their vintage rally cars, including the legendary Audi S1. They will stop at the spectator points to oblige the fans with autographs. Later that night, at 19:45 hours, there will be another opportunity for autograph hunters, when the rally legends gather once more on the Service Park stage.
Volkswagen could clinch the WRC title in Germany
One thing is certain: on the final day of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland, the fans will cheer at the winners of the rally in front of the Porta Nigra. They may even get to celebrate German World Champions, since the ADAC Rallye Deutschland potentially holds two decisive wins in store for Volkswagen Motorsport: In the manufacturer's standings, the Wolfsburg-based company has a 175-point lead over Citroën. Should they be able to maintain a lead of at least 172 points, they would definitely win their second manufacturers' title in a row. For Volkswagen, Germany may also be decisive in winning the drivers' classification. Three Volkswagen drivers are currently in the lead: Sébastien Ogier (187 points), followed by Jari-Matti Latvala (143 points), and Andreas Mikkelsen (95 points). The best driver for a different manufacturer is Mads Østberg (Citroën Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team), who is in fourth place with a score of 66 points (121 points behind Ogier). If Ogier manages to keep a lead of at least 112 points over the best non-Volkswagen driver after the ADAC Rallye Deutschland he would also be sure to clinch a Volkswagen win in the drivers' classification.
New fan service: Michelin shuttle buses
For the first time ever, Michelin, the FIA and ADAC are offering a Michelin shuttle bus service that will take spectators from the Trier Service Park to selected Special Stages and back at this year's ADAC Rallye Deutschland. The service is specifically aimed at rally fans who do not travel by car or who want to go straight to the Special Stages from Trier and the hotels there. In addition, the buses will contribute to environmental protection by further reducing traffic on the access roads. The ride on the Michelin shuttle buses will be free and exclusively reserved for rally spectators with valid rally passes. Anyone interested in using the Michelin shuttle service can register at the designated desk in the Service Park. For departure times, go to www.adac.de/rallye-deutschland (click on Zuschauer or Spectators).
Internet spectator service: Safety video featuring Thierry Neuville and much more
The first and foremost source of information on the 2014 ADAC Rallye Deutschland is the Internet: www.adac.de/rallye-deutschland (click on Zuschauer or Spectators) has all the essential info, including some valuable safety tips. These are presented in a particularly enlightening manner in a video clip featuring WRC star Thierry Neuville.
Under the Spectators tab, Internet users will find the up-to-date schedule and detailed maps including all spectator points for downloading. They will also find information regarding the spectator guidance system, an overview of all car parks and info points including exact GPS coordinates. As a special service, ADAC offers visitors to the rally useful tips and the accommodation addresses, a listing of 20 camp sites within the region as well as information on temporary camp sites in the close vicinity of Special Stages. There is also an overview of reserved handicapped parking and spectator spots. During the ADAC Rallye Deutschland, the fans can visit the website to get updates on the rally in progress. There will be live timing, newsflashes with the latest information and a live text service.
