Munich. Rally racing is teamwork: from the cockpit where the driver and co-driver must form a working unit to the Service Park where the mechanics perform miracles in record time to the organising team that includes a high number of salaried staff and volunteers. At the ADAC Rallye Deutschland (22 to 25 August), this effort starts with the ADAC regional and local clubs whose staff work to make the event a success. They are actively committed at the local level and, amongst other things, assume patronage of the Special Stages (SS).
Some 3,000 volunteers – most of them affiliated with ADAC – make the German FIA WRC rally ADAC's greatest collaborative motor sport accomplishment by far. During the event, the volunteer flag marshals do the lion's share of the work. Some 2,000 trained marshals will flock to the Saarland and neighbouring regions at the end of August to take charge of safety at the 19 Special Stages of this year's rally and to dismantle everything after the event in the most environment-friendly manner. Another job of the marshals is to ensure safety at the Shakedown, in the Service Park on the Bostalsee lakeshore and in the approx. 50 spectator areas. Before the ADAC Rallye Deutschland kicks off, ADAC will brief the flag marshals – who are all trained marshals – about the requirements of the WRC event and its special rules as well as the expected high turnout from all over the world.
"Top-tier motor racing of the kind the fans can enjoy at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland would be impossible without a broad support,” ADAC Sport President Hermann Tomczyk comments on the contribution of the volunteers. "Time and again I'm thrilled with the commitment of the many helpers each year. The marshals make an invaluable contribution to the success of the German WRC event. They have great responsibility. We cannot thank them enough. They are the backbone of the event.”
Year after year, some 70 ADAC local clubs and motor sport clubs from across Germany dispatch the marshals required at the event. Clubs from neighbouring countries provide additional support. The clubs from Germany and abroad call on their members to lend their support to the ADAC Rallye Deutschland and liaise with Rally Control to organise the activities. Getting involved usually creates strong attachment to the local communities at the rally venues since it is quite common that the clubs and persons in charge of a Special Stage remain the same for years.
In addition to the marshals, some 1,000 volunteers support the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. For the most part, they are tasked with ensuring fire safety and, first and foremost, providing medical assistance. Depending on its length, a Special Stage must have several first-aid stations, mobile medical teams and fire safety staff. Volunteer support also comes from the rally region: especially when it comes to setting up, furnishing and operating the car parks and spectator areas, including food and drink stands, ADAC seeks the cooperation with the local towns which recruit numerous volunteers from clubs, groups or companies.
