16.08.2016 - ADAC Rallye Deutschland

The highlights of the 2016 ADAC Rallye Deutschland

Munich/Trier, 16 August 2016 – All eyes in the rally world are on Trier and the surroundings where the ADAC Rallye Deutschland will take place between 18 and 21 August 2016. Explosive rally action will be guaranteed when World Champion Sébastien Ogier and the other WRC stars tackle the 18 Special Stages of the FIA World Rally Championship. Below is a summary of all the highlights that rally fans can look forward to at this year’s ADAC Rallye Deutschland, plus some useful information.

Thursday, 18 August 2016
Shakedown Konz (4.55km, from 09:30 hours): a “rally before the rally”, the Konz Shakedown is certain to whet the fans’ appetite for the next three days. Tip for fans: Kommlingen Arena. It is staged along both slopes of a small valley very easy to oversee. €20 Shakedown passes will be available on site. Admission is free for holders of rally passes.

Show Start at the Porta Nigra in Trier (from 20:00 hours): the official start against the backdrop of the illuminated Porta Nigra is a must for rally-racing enthusiasts. Tip for fans: Hauptmarkt. Beginning at 19:30 hours, the WRC stars will be signing autographs here. Admission to the autograph signing session and the Show Start is free.

Friday, 19 August 2016
SS 1 & 3 Mittelmosel (22.00km, 10:03 hours & 14:58 hours): the ADAC Rallye Deutschland starts right in the Mosel vineyards. The five hillside spectator areas offer numerous viewpoints. Tip for fans: Weierbach Kehre (switchback). Here, spectators can enjoy the rally spectacular in an amphitheatre-like setting.

SS 2 & 4 Moselland (23.38km, 10:44 hours & 15:36 hours): narrow vineyard service roads, tight turns and vicious crossroads – this is the Moselland Special Stage. Really up-close, fans will take in intense rally action at the spectator areas. Tip for fans: Panoramastraße (panoramic road). Here, high above the Mosel, the WRC cars are in view for a long time, and you can walk down through the vineyard to the walls.

SS 5 Ollmuth (8.21km, 18:12 hours): this all-new Special Stage is very close to Trier. At this very challenging circuit stage, to be completed twice, the drivers will attack narrow rural roads, tight corners and tricky crests at the highest rally-racing speeds. Tip for fans: natural spectator stands. The spacious hillside area puts a good two thirds of the stage into view.

Saturday, 20 August 2016
SS 6 & 11 Freisen-Westrich (14.73km, 08:15 hours & 15:28 hours): the Special Stage between the Saarland and Palatinate regions is back on the itinerary of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. The numerous ascents and descents with many kinks will make drivers feel like on a roller coaster. Tip for fans: Eckersweiler. This spectator area is close to a serviced camping and motorhome site.

SS 7 & 12 Bosenberg (14.45km, 08:41 hours & 15:54 hours): this challenging Saarland Special Stage takes the competitors along the prominent landmark hill near the town of St. Wendel. The smallest mistake can cost a lot of time on the angled country roads and woodland passages. Tip for fans: Reitscheid. The spacious hillside spectator area affords prime views.

WP 8, 9 & 13 Arena Panzerplatte (2.87km, 10:17 hours, 10:25 hours & 17:30 hours): there will be three Panzerplatte Sprints. This course with good visibility almost throughout will be run twice in immediate succession in the morning. Tip for fans: Panzerplatte Turm (tower). Located at the highest point of the area, it is the perfect place to watch the battle of the top rally drivers against the clock.

Extra tip for fans: the supporting events at the Baumholder military range are just as exciting as the rally action itself. For instance, there will be a rolling exhibit of historic Volkswagen rally cars to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Volkswagen Motorsport. And ŠKODA will hold its own ‘corso’. Numerous stands with sweepstakes will be set up. Rally taxi rides will be drawn directly on the Panzerplatte. The lucky winners will take a ride in the co-driver’s seat of historic Volkswagen rally cars or a ŠKODA 130 RS driven by former German rally champion Matthias Kahle on the Sprint course of the Panzerplatte. Volkswagen and ADAC will erect a 100m2 video wall to show exciting live footage of the Sprint stages at the Große Platte spectator point. The supporting events are scheduled between 13:00 and 16:00 hours.

SS 10 & 14 Panzerplatte Long (40.80km, 10:46 hours & 17:48 hours): the supreme stage in the ADAC Rallye Deutschland is an extreme test of the drivers and cars. More often than not, the overall winner is determined at this Special Stage. Popular places are the notorious Hinkelstein boulders lining the road and the legendary Gina jump. Tip for fans: EVERYTHING. Each spectator area on the Baumholder military range has its own attractions.

Sunday, 21 August 2016
SS 15 & 17 Dhrontal (14.79km, 07:13 hours & 09:47 hours): this Special Stage in the steep vineyards northeast of Trier is notorious for its many hairpin bends. Tip for fans: Galeria Dhron. This spectator area is one of the rally’s hotspots, offering the fans a panoramic top-down view of nine uphill hairpin corners.

SS 16 & 18 Sauertal (14.84km, 08:42 hours & 12:08 hours): the 2015 opening SS near the Luxembourg border is this year’s final stage. At this new Power Stage, bonus WRC points are up for grabs. Tip for fans: Kersch. From here, the public will be able to follow the rally cars into the finish line on a length of over one kilometre.

Podium ceremony at the Porta Nigra in Trier (15:00 hours): it all ends where it started – at the famous Porta Nigra. Against the backdrop of the ancient Roman gate, fans will have ample opportunity to celebrate the best drivers of the German WRC event. Tip for fans: for the insiders it may be the last occasion to hunt for some winner autographs. Admission is free.

Rally up-close at the Service Park in Trier

The Service Park on the Trier fairgrounds is the best place to watch the teams at work. This is also the spot to explore the theme presentations set up by the various car makers and partners of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. Volkswagen will be present with a big exhibit of historic rally vehicles, including a 1986 Golf II GTI Group A. A faithful replica of this car will be used as the 0 car. It will be driven by three-time ADAC Rallye Deutschland winner Dieter Depping (1994, 1996, 1997) as the opening car on every Special Stage of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. At the Trier Service Park, you will also find numerous fan shops as well as eating/shopping, sanitary and other facilities. Tip for fans: Jägerkaserne. This car park offers the best access, since there are no parking spaces at the Service Park itself nor opposite, along the B49.

Scheduled arrival times for the first cars at the Service Park in Trier:

Thursday, 18 August 2016, open around the clock, no set service times
Friday, 19 August 2016 13:37 hours 19:07 hours
Saturday, 20 August 2016 06:32 hours 13:30 hours 20:12 hours
Sunday, 21 August 2016 06:12 hours 13:01 hours

Tip for fans: Meet the Crews. To end the rally day, the fans should not miss dropping by at the Trier Service Park. On the central stage, the three best-placed drivers will give their account of the day in a public press conference.
